The 5"/38 dual purpose gun was indispensable in the Pacific during WW2. It provided effective anti-aircraft defense for Navy ships and was routinely used for close-in shore bombardment during amphibious invasions. Even used against Japanese battleships and heavy cruisers in some courageous actions. The 5"/38 was one of the finest naval guns ever. Main armament for US destroyers/escorts and served as secondary armament for US battleships and cruisers. Also used on US aircraft carriers.
